Motorola reenters flagship category with edge and edge+

Share

After several years of not releasing an absolute flagship, parent company Lenovo thought it was about time. It announced the Motorola edge and edge+ last night. Narrow 5G phones with a sharply sloping screen on the sides and good cameras. But would it be enough?

In the meantime, it has been blown into the ‘super phones’ category. We have the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the iPhone 11 Pro Max, OnePlus 8 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro. However, Lenovo saw an opportunity for a formidable opponent in the form of the now announced Motorola edge and edge+.

The Motorola edge and edge+

Both phones have a 6.7-inch OLED display with 90Hz refresh rate. Motorola chooses a relatively narrow screen with a screen ratio of 19.5:9. Motorola calls it an Edge Fall screen because of the 90° rounding on the side. Concerns about ghost touches should be eliminated by an additional setup menu. Both phones are also suitable for the future 5G and have a splashproof housing with, yet unique in this category, a headphone port. Differences are the processor selection, the rear camera, the battery and that only the Motorola edge+ can be charged wirelessly. Another difference; the edge+ does not come out of this, only the edge.

Specifications Motorola edge

The Motorola edge is driven by a Snapdragon 765G octa-core processor from Qualcomm. Built-in is a pleasantly large 4500 mAh that can only be wired to charge up to 18 watts. According to the specifications this should be sufficient for 2 days of battery life. On the back we find a four-headed camera system consisting of a 64 megapixel main sensor with f/1.8 lens. There is a 16 megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with an angle of view of 117°. What is special about this is that you can also use it to take sharp photos from very close range. There is also an 8 megapixel telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom. The fourth sensor is a so-called ToF-sensor for depth recognition. At the front is a 25 megapixel self-image camera behind a screen hole in the upper left corner of the screen.

The edge runs Android 10 but not Android One. Motorola does not promise to install bloatware, it would be a pretty bare Android version but hard promises about updates are not made. Also special is the stereo speakers that can produce a lot of sound. As far as audio is concerned, this edge series is very popular anyway; we don’t see that very often anymore. The edge gets a recommended retail price of 599 euro and is for the time being only available in black. Expect it in the shops somewhere around May.

edge+

If you want to throw even more money against a new device, look out for the edge+. Although he won’t be for sale everywhere, he skips the Netherlands as it seems. It can handle the fastest 5G speeds up to 4 Gbit/s. This is immediately the reason why it won’t be for sale here yet; 5G hasn’t been deployed yet, let alone on the mmWave band.

The Motorola edge+ gets enviable specifications like a Snapdragon 865 with 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage memory, a 5000 mAh battery with wireless charging and reverse charging + a 108 megapixel camera system. The only thing we can think of that is slightly disappointing is the Full HD+ resolution. Other flagships often stretch to Quad HD+. The edge+ will be in stores in the US from 14 May for a suggested retail price of $ 999.99. The device is also coming to Europe but only a handful of countries.
