It extends exposure times to take beautiful images of the night sky and more.

What you need to know

  • A teardown of the latest MIUI beta shows the company is working on a long exposure mode.
  • The feature works similarly to Google’s Astrophotography mode.
  • It allows for more light to be captured, and also allows for motion in a scene to be reflected a bit better.

Hot on the heels of the news that Xiaomi is working on cloning the Top Shot feature from Google Camera, XDA Developers reports that the Chinese giant is also looking to implement another of Google’s most popular camera features: Astrophotography mode.

Introduced with the Pixel 4 last year, the extremely popular Astrophotography mode works by extending exposure times (along with a bunch of other software tricks) to take in more light. The results are beautiful portraits of the night sky, which Xiaomi phones will hopefully also be able to take very soon.

The longer exposure times can also allow you to capture motion in a scene better; for example, trails behind moving clouds. Strings found in the code suggest it’ll offer many profiles designed for different settings, such as capturing the night sky, using a tripod, moving crowds and lights, and a lot more.

The feature is, in fact, already live in the latest MIUI 12 beta for the POCO F2 Pro, so Xiaomi users will likely not have to wait for too long before being able to try it themselves.
